Led by COP30 Youth Climate Champion Marcele Oliveira, the platform aims to connect young people around the world to climate change debates

On International Youth Day, August 12, the platform led by COP30 Youth Climate Champion Marcele Oliveira is launching a collective mobilization to invite youth-led initiatives worldwide to engage with the COP30 Presidency’s Action Agenda.

Across the globe, there are numerous social, cultural, and ancestral technologies in local territories, led by girls and young people of African descent, Indigenous peoples, and local communities. These groups are the most affected by the climate crisis, despite contributing the least to it, and they are constantly seeking ways to build resilience, adapt, and mitigate its impacts in their territories.

These technologies need to be made visible and scaled up, and this platform serves as a tool to promote and expand these practices beyond local territories. The call will remain open throughout August, and youth-led initiatives can register to have their work featured on an online map and showcased in #MutiraoCOP30 (COP30 Youth Mobilization) campaign materials.

This mapping, designed to help youth better understand the Action Agenda, aligns with other initiatives also created to be inclusive and to boost civil society engagement on the road to COP30, such as the Self-Managed Ethical Stocktake and the Global Initiative for Climate Change Information Integrity.

“We know that COP30 has the potential to shift the global climate justice debate by strengthening solutions that come from the Global South. Our challenge, as the Youth Presidency, is to ensure that engagement spaces are accessible, meaningfully include youth participation, and make sense not only to those inside the technical processes of the Climate Conferences, but also to those outside of them. COP30 is for everyone!” said Marcele Oliveira.

“In its Fourth Letter, the COP30 Presidency proposes that, in order to advance the Paris Agreement, an Action Agenda should be organized around six thematic pillars encompassing mitigation, adaptation, and means of implementation. These pillars are: (i) Transition in the Energy, Industry, and Transport Sectors; (ii) Sustainable Management of Forests, Oceans, and Biodiversity; (iii) Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems; (iv) Building Resilience in Cities, Infrastructure, and Water; (v) Promotion of Human and Social Development; and finally, the cross-cutting pillar, (vi) Catalysts and Accelerators, including Finance, Technology, and Capacity Building. This year’s Climate Conference thematic days were also structured around this Action Agenda. So, how can we ensure that youth are engaged in this dialogue and able to contribute effectively?”

“The first step is always about information. Our team understands that youth-led organizations and actions fit into all the pillars, and this needed to be made known. With the interactive map available on-line, simplified categories, and an open campaign about the Action Agenda, we hope that more youth organizations will feel part of this journey toward COP30—from their territories, their gardens, their reforestation efforts, and their ecosystem clean-up activities,” said Marcele Oliveira.

The #MutiraoCOP30 is open for submissions starting today and presents the pillars of the Action Agenda in an accessible format, categorized by areas of action:

1. Research, science, technology, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), and ancestral knowledge

2. Reforestation, agroecology, combating hunger and environmental racism

3. Territorial activities, collective care, mental health

4. Climate education, culture, combating misinformation

5. Resilient cities, adaptation, just transition, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)

6. Activism and political advocacy for climate justice

From Brasil to the Americas, across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania, the website is available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, and emphasizes that the solutions we need for an implementation-focused Climate Conference are found at the local level—in territories and marginalized communities, in Brasil and around the world—that strive daily to ensure climate justice. Submissions to the site will be amplified through the #MutiraoCOP30campaign.

“Action is synonymous with youth. With creativity and hands-on effort, we’ve created a true collective effort. This platform reinforces our leadership in the climate agenda as both present and future, amplifying the work carried out as part of this mobilization—everyone together, rooting for the implementation of the Action Agenda and contributing in our own way. It is going to be beautiful to see all these efforts propelled by the COP30 network and gaining greater visibility!” concluded Marcele Oliveira.
